utilizing
the unlikely.
I have been needing to try something new. I work on a lot of graphic design projects using the same aspects of design, and while traditional design principles are important, I wanted to switch it up. I didn’t want to keep getting lost in design a project to then forget to think outside the box. I knew I severely needed to think outside of what was normal to bring out my “inner artist”. Time to break the rules.
where to start?
For context, my friends and I started planning a scrapbooking night. I was put in charge of the flyer. To get inspo, I found some art I liked and compiled them here. The first four are done by artists I follow on Instagram or found on Pinterest, the last design I did myself. Seeing each of these art elements gave me the idea of the direction I wanted to take.
outside the box
While working to think outside the box, I had a new thought. I could start with what I ALREADY had, then use it in a different way. I grabbed three different images from my camera roll, added a threshold filter in photoshop, and picked the best one! This became my new element for my design, utilizing an unlikely image.
placing elements
To begin the full layout of the design, I needed to first get my ideas out on paper. Sketches were the answer, as it always goes smoother with a simple pen in hand! With these sketches, I chose pieces but I didn’t pick any full layout. The sketching here allowed me to see where to place separate elements in the design!
sticking the landing
I spent my time arranging the elements to be just right. My first draft didn’t hit the style I was going for, so I added new elements with intention and I ensured that the viewer focus was right on the most important text. In the end, I am greatly satisfied with the use of an unlikely photo in my design! It’s so necessary to try new things using the resources that are available. Go think outside the box!
